Nigerian New Minimum Wage. The Federal Government assures workers that despite ongoing negotiations, the new minimum wage will be effective from May 1, 2024.
Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, conveyed this message during the May Day celebration in Abuja, expressing regret for the delay in finalizing the new wage but assuring ongoing consultations for its prompt release.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have consistently urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to expedite the upward review of wage awards.
Recently, Organised Labour demanded N615,000 as the new minimum wage to address economic challenges and the high cost of living.
They argue that the current N30,000 minimum wage no longer suffices for the average Nigerian worker, noting discrepancies in wage payments by some governors. Nigerian New Minimum Wage
President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 2024 Workers’ Day event in Abuja, commended Nigerian workers for their contributions to national growth.
He affirmed the government’s readiness to consider the committee’s recommendations on the new national minimum wage, assuring workers of the administration’s commitment to Nigeria’s progress through ongoing reforms.
