A Lagos court has ordered the detention of a mother and her daughter for allegedly employing two underage girls as domestic workers, constituting child labor.
In a Federal High Court in Lagos, 25-year-old Nwobi Olubube Favour and her mother, Nwobi Ebele Angela (55), were remanded for allegedly exploiting two underage girls as domestic servants.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro ordered their detention after they pleaded not guilty to a four-count charge filed by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), accusing them of harboring and employing the underage girls for domestic work.
The accused, residents of B 41, Abijoh GRA, Chois Garden Estate Lekki, Lagos State, allegedly committed the offenses between May and November 2023.
Prosecutor Uzunwa I. Egonu informed the court that their actions negatively impacted the physical, social, and psychological development of the two teenagers. Additionally, NAPTIP charged them with assaulting two agency officials, Ederibhalo Ajiegbe Elvis and Trust Oluwaseun Adekoye, at the agency’s office in GRA, Ikeja, on March 12. It was alleged that during the assault, they took a laptop and an iPhone 8 from the officials.
Upon their plea, the prosecutor requested a trial date and urged the court to remand them, while their lawyer requested a short adjournment to file bail applications.
Justice Awogboro adjourned the matter to May 7.
